Rumor has been floating around that Brent Venables, the Sooners' defensive coach, is going to Arkansas to replace the resigned ex-coach Houston Nutt. This can't be happening at the worse time. With Big 12 Championship game coming up this weekend, this can be a potential huge distraction to the team. Remember Mike Stoops in 2003?
At the same time, I understand that this is "that" time of the year. Coaches getting fired, new coaches coming in, coaches signing extensions yada yada yada. That's just the way college football works. As soon as they are hired, they have to start getting recruits ASAP.
I do have a mixed feeling about BV's defensive scheme. His pass coverage sucks. His zone coverage has so many holes even my sister can run through them. But he has a great run defense and he's a great recruiter. Sooners' LBs have been candidates for various awards annually during Brent's stay so that says something about the talents he has been bringing into Norman.
I won't sweat it as much. A rumor is a rumor. But nevertheless, expect the unexpected.

Unlike losing Mike, I'm kinda indifferent on losing BV. Mike's D was top-notch. Brent's was good but not great.
True. Brent would have been a great defensive coach if his schemes attacks QBs a lot more on passing plays. More blitzes and man to man coverage, he can mix it up a bit

It's over. Bobby Petrino took the job today. IMO, this guy is as classless as Nick Satan for ditching Falcons like that. I feel for the players.
Brent's defense is questionable. Only great when dealing with Big12 opponents. Outside of conference, he's like a deer in headlights.
